Contributor terms
What happens to your writing when somebody else accepts it into their work. Worth the two minutes: one part of it cannot be undone.
The short version
- You keep the copyright in everything you write.
- When a passage of yours is accepted into somebody else’s work, you let them publish and sell that work with your passage in it.
- You are credited. You are not paid, and you cannot take the passage back out later.
1What you keep
You own the copyright in every word you write here. Agreeing to these terms does not transfer it, and nothing on stogit changes who the author of your writing is. You can publish the same writing anywhere else, at any time, without asking us or anybody else.
2What you grant when a passage is accepted
A work on stogit belongs to the person who started it. When you suggest a passage and the owner of that work accepts it, your passage becomes part of that work.
At that moment you grant the owner of that work a licence to use, copy, adapt, edit, translate, publish, perform and sell the work containing your passage, anywhere in the world, in any format, for as long as copyright lasts, without paying you.
That licence cannot be withdrawn. It has to work that way: an owner who finishes a book and sells it cannot have a chapter removed from it afterwards, and a licence you could revoke is one no publisher would accept.
You also grant stogit permission to show the work on the site and to include your passage when the owner exports it.
3Credit
You are named as a contributor wherever the work lists them, including inside files the owner exports. Being a contributor does not make you an author of the work as a whole, and it does not give you a say in what happens to it.
The owner may edit, cut or roll back any passage, including yours. A work is a thing somebody is making, not a record of everything that was offered to it.
4Money
There is no payment for contributing, and no share of anything the owner earns from the work. If you want a share, agree that with the owner yourself, in writing, outside stogit. We are not part of that agreement and will not enforce it.
5What you promise
That the writing you submit is yours, that you have the right to grant the licence above, and that it does not infringe anybody else’s copyright.
Do not paste in somebody else’s work. It is not yours to license, and it puts the owner of the work in a position they did not choose and cannot see.
6Works you own
If you start a work, everything above applies to you from the other side. You may accept, decline, edit and roll back what people offer. You may export and publish the result and keep what it earns.
What you cannot do is present other people’s passages as written by you alone. Exports credit contributors, and removing that credit is a breach of these terms and, separately, of their rights as authors.
7Changes to these terms
If a term changes in a way that affects what an owner may do with your writing, we will ask you to agree again before you contribute anything further. Passages already accepted stay under the terms that applied when they were accepted.
